Gingham Dress 01

Gingham is a medium-weight balanced plain-woven fabric made from dyed cotton or cotton blend yarn. It’s made of carded or combed yarns, medium or fine yarns, where the colouring is on the warp yarns and always along the grain (weft).

Gingham Fabric 01

Gingham is easy to sew as a woven 100% cotton fabric. It’s ideal for kid’s clothing, trims, dresses, shirts and skirts. Historically though, it was best known for table cloths and aprons, which are still popular today.

Gingham Dress 02

Why is it called Gingham?

Gingham comes from the Malayan word genggang, or striped.

Gingham Fabric 03

How to identify Gingham?

You can spot Gingham from its contrasting-check, generally white and coloured with even-sized checks. Back in the day, it was distinguished primarily for being a ‘dyed on the yarn’ fabric, meaning the yarn is dyed before it is woven.

TIPS

- Gingham washes well but ensure you pre-shrink your fabric before sewing.

- Align your fabric properly before cutting, lay it perfectly flat and align the check to the pattern and grain direction.

- Cut Gingham on the bias for added design features!

Linen Blend Fabrics

Thursday, February 28th, 2019

Another fabric we expect to see on our Fabric Buying Bus Trip on Saturday 30th March is a Linen Blend.

Linen Blend Fabric 01

It is similar to 100% Linen with its key feature being the cool comfort linen provides, (which is perfect for hot climates) however linen blends have the wearability of its blended fabric and are significantly less prone to wrinkle than pure linen.

Linen Blend Fabric 02

Linens are made from the fibres of a flax plant. It’s laborious to manufacture, however the fibre is very strong, absorbent and dries faster than cotton.

Linen Blend 03

What is Linen usually blended with?

The blends are not often disclosed however its common for blends to contain cotton, rayon, polyester and sometimes viscose.

Linen/Cotton – Cotton softens linen and keeps the fullness of linen while reducing the wrinkles and keeping a crisp look.

Linen/Rayon – Rayon blended with linen creates a substantially softer fabric with more fluid drape and a subtle sheen from the rayon.

Linen/Polyester – Polyester helps linen to wash better, wrinkle less, and retain colour-fastness. Depending on the type of fabric, polyester usually softens the feel of linen as well, but in a synthetic way.

What can you make from Linen Blends?

Linen Blends come in a range of plain colours and prints, they are a light to medium weight fabric and perfect for dresses, skirts, tops, pants, suits and more!

The majority of the fabrics they source are deadstock items, which means that they are end-of-line, mill overruns, cancelled orders or designer excess fabrics. These are fabrics that are deemed a waste product in the fashion industry and would often otherwise end up as landfill.

Liberty Fabrics The Fabric Shop

Over the years The Fabric Store have formed relationships with some of the best designer suppliers, both internationally and locally, in order to bring us an amazing and unique range of stock without the waste and ethical implications of mass manufacture.
